The late Princess Diana gave a lot of publicity to landmines and I think we are all aware that landmines are something that only nasty foreigners use and which, thankfully, have been outlawed.
What we may not be aware of is that our own government is responsible for something almost as bad - cluster bombs. These are bombs that contain dozens or hundreds of little bombs. When the main bomb goes off, these little bombs are scattered in all directions and go off in their turn, spreading death and destruction over a wide area.
Except that they don't all go off.
Except that they don't all go off.
The failure rate is small, but when hundreds of bombs are used, thousands of bomblets are scattered and even a 2% failure rate means that on every battlefield or boming location there may be dozens of these brightly coloured objects lying about, just waiting for someone to come along and pick them up - and that someone is, all too often, a child.
The Rhyl branch of the Soroptomists have been mounting a petition against cluster bombs. You may have missed them gathering signatures or you may live too far away to come to Rhyl, but please watch this film and find out what you can do to help in this campaign.
