South Africa is a land of contrasts, from the extreme dryness of the Kalahari Desert in the west to the lush vineyards along the coast in the east; from the wealth and luxury of Cape Town's posh suburbs to the squalour and misery of the shanty towns that surround them; from the gentleness and magnanimity of men like Archbishop Tutu and Nelson Mandela to the mindlessness and evil of violent crime and child rape.
