Famous as a mining town where riches came quick (and usually disappeared just as fast) Johannesburg is a modern city with splendid modern buildings and awful Third World problems of slums, overcrowded public transport, and a soaring crime rate. It also houses some fascinating museums, parks and heritage sites, as Dawn Jones reminds us.
