Smoo Cave

The view from the entrance to Smoo Cave

Smoo Cave is little more than a shallow indentation in the rock, but it once extended for a quarter of a mile out to sea. More and more of the roof of the cave collapsed until now all that is left is this relatively small cave.

That said, what is left is rich in history and legend, from the dubious tale of a nobleman who went to meet the devil but so frightened him with all the charms and relics he bore that the devil fled - straight up through the roof, to the unfortunately true story of the man who threw his enemies down through that hole and left their bodies to be carried away by the tide.

Those of a speleological turn of mind can take a boat trip into the cave on a lake which is fed by a dramatic waterfall. Admission to the cave is free, but you have to pay for the boat trip.
