Stanydale Temple

As I trudged over the rather boggy peat I wondered what I was letting myself in for. Archaeologists are keen on calling anything they can't immediately identify "ritual" or "religious", so this structure was probably just a Neolithic barn and some excavator with druids on the brain had decided to call it a "temple".

I couldn't have been more wrong! Not only was it too big to be a barn, but the presence of three alcoves, one on each side and one at the end, in front of which there were neat little fire-places, too tidy to be a domestic cooking fire, did seem to point very firmly at a religious purpose. Nearby hut circles gave the size of domestic architecture and emphasised that the "temple" was definitely something else.

That said, once I had finished filming, I still had half a mile of peat over or through which to squelch back to the van!
