Breconshire or Brecknokshire lies in the heart of Wales, even though it is only an hour's drive north of Cardiff, for it is cut off from the coast by the towering Brecon Beacons. These mountains with their distinctive shape tower over the town and even when hidden by low cloud - as frequently happens - their presence can be felt.
Breconshire contains some splendid walking country, but do be careful, for the Beacons can be extremely wild with atrocious conditions springing out of nowhere in horribly short spaces of time. More than one hiker has lost his life through being unprepared - which all adds to the challenge!
