Battered Convoy

An improvised armoured car lies where it was destroyed

The battered and blasted convoy by the side of the main road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has long fascinated me, but either I have been in a bus or a taxi, or I have been in a hurry, and so unable to stop and investigate it.

In 2001, at last, I both had a car and had time, and this film is the result.

When I went to Israel in 2009, I discovered that the vehicles have been moved from their evocative position by the side of the road and now stand on concrete plinths. I'm glad to see that someone is taking an interest in them, but sticking them neatly on plinths takes away much of the drama of their previous position; they are now simply a collection of meaningless rusty vehicles instead of a testimony to the violence of their destruction and the heroism of those who rode in them.
