The Great Wall was as impressive as we had hoped!*
The Great Wall was as impressive as we had hoped!

Fine, I thought; Great Wall of China, no problem. It wasn't until the minibus stopped at the end of the road and the guide supplied by China Highlights scampered off to get the tickets, that the full horror of the thing dawned on me.

You see, I am not comfortable about heights. In fact, standing on anything higher than a chair makes me nervous, and high above me, held aloft only by a very insubstantial piece of wire rope, was the means of ascending to the famous Wall!

Well, it has always been my boast that while I may be terrified by heights, I will not allow my phobia to stop me doing something I really need to do, so now I had to make good on my words. This film shows how well I did - and if the camera bounces about a bit I assure you it is not my trembling hands, it is the wretched ski-lift crossing the pylons that hold it up!

As for the Wall itself, it is every bit as awe-inspiring as the guide books claim and our only regret was that pressure of time prevented us taking off for the furthest stretches away on the summits of the mountains. We had to be content with walking up to the nearest watchtower and down to the impressive gateway and then taking the luge to the bottom - which wasn't much fun but it had this one great advantage: you were never more than two inches above the ground!
